 Etymology:
会意 Associative Compound.
Hand 爫 (zhao: claw; radical 87) plucking fruits from a
tree 木 (mu4: tree)

Through this character seems to be composed of “claws” over “tree,” it is found in dictionaries under the “sift” radical. The “claws” are supposed to represent a hand picking fruit from a tree, whence “to cull.” The meaning “bright colors” is by sound-loan.

形声 Pictophonetic.
扌 (shou3: hand; radical 64) suggests the meaning while
采 (cai3: collect; gather) provides the sound.

簡體 Simplified.
