The Company

Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET: 遠傳電信股份有限公司) is a leading telecommunications company in Taiwan established since 1997. As the fastest growing, revenue-producing GSM operator, the company was listed on the Taiwan OTC Stock Exchange in December 2001. Being a pioneer in the field, FET continued with its successful “firsts”: the first to offer the Java 32K SIM Toolkit, mobile banking, m-commerce, real-time access to financial, entertainment and headline news, mobile fax/mail; e-coupons in Taiwan. It was also the first to launch the first multimedia mobile service in Taiwan (in 2003), FET Br@vo, made Taiwan’s first live 3G video call and later demonstrated video clips via MyFETBr@vo.

As the third largest mobile operator in Taiwan, FET is always on the cutting edge of mobile technology and leading the pack with innovative offerings. With the advent of the mobile wallet, they have embarked on developing a mobile wallet, named Friday Wallet 手機錢包.

  A Mobile Project

Friday, a sub-brand under the FET umbrella, was created to break away from the deeply ingrained FET branding in the Taiwanese market. This separation of identity allows FET to pull in new consumers, new subscribers or users, based on content, services and offerings that appeals to the market. The Friday brand is a magician that not only enriches the life of the subscriber (through various content offerings), but entertains with innovation and wonderment. Besides the Friday Wallet 手機錢包, Friday also has three more apps: 購物 Shopping, 影音 Media and 助手 App Assistant.

My assignment was to create/design a new interface for the mobile wallet 手機錢包, which is not only eye-catching (yet simple and realistic), intuitive, functional but allows for future growth within the design itself. Since the wallet is rolled out in phases, my primary focus was the splash/landing page, home, menu, coupons and membership cards pages. Included in the design work was the concept, color scheme, layout and icons.

Concept • Colors

From Dusk Till Dawn 黃昏到黎明

It is no longer about replacing the physical wallet with a digital wallet, but about the magical moments a user experiences with the Friday Wallet regardless of the day or time. The Friday Wallet 手機錢包 works 24/7: granting the user magical moments to conjure whether it be in the simplicity of payment, a timely offer or even a reminder to collect points without having to bring (a) physical card(s). This design concept is meant to repeatedly bring to life that message and drive home the experience.

Color Scheme 1: Magician

Working from Friday Wallet’s Green, a complementary Radiant Orchid (purple), Pantone’s 2014 color of the year was chosen, together with a close match to Pantone’s 2015 Tangerine, which coincidentally is also one of Friday’s umbrella colors. A neutral, trendy color, Pantone’s 2015 Glacier Gray is used as the fourth color for the background/template of the application and to tie the three vibrant colors together.

Secondary and tertiary colors were then introduced for broader expansion of functions and design flexibility. Included are olive green, Pantone’s 2015 Lavender Herb, Pantone’s 2014 Mauve Mist, Royal Purple and Pantone’s 2015 Titanium.

Color Scheme 2: One-arm Mage

Color update: Keeping Friday Wallet’s Green, and Orange, a Teal color is added to this combination to tone down the look. A neutral gray Pantone’s 2014 Paloma is used as the fourth color for the background/template of the application and to marry the vibrant colors together.

Secondary and tertiary colors were also added for broader expansion of functions and design flexibility. Included are Green, Pantone’s 2015 Glacier Gray, Gray Teal, Seagreen and Olive Green.

Color Scheme 3: Homogenous Necromancer

Monochromatic colors: Friday Wallet’s Green, a complementary Royal Purple (in place of the Orange), and Teal is employed for continuity. A neutral gray Pantone’s 2014 Paloma is used as the fourth color for the background/template of the application and to marry the colors.

Secondary and tertiary colors were then introduced for broader expansion of functions and design flexibility. Included are Seagreen, Pantone’s 2015 Glacier Gray, Pantone’s 2014 Mauve Mist, Pantone’s 2015 Lavender Herb and Seafoam.

Splash/Landing Page

From Dusk Till Dawn 黃昏到黎明: Set against the backdrop of Taipei’s iconic skyline, with the 101 in the center, we plant the flag for Friday Wallet 手機錢包 to be the de facto digital wallet for Taiwan.

Design A

Sparkling Friday’s “D” floating up from the logo accentuate a magical feeling when the user adopts Friday Wallet 手機錢包. The Friday’s “D” is further included in the background as two bigger “D”s to represent the rising sun and setting moon, driving back the theme of “From Dusk Till Dawn 黃昏到黎明.”

Design B

The magical spotlight is on Friday Wallet 手機錢包, the spellbinding star of the show/app. The gradation of colors represents the day to night transcendence, driving back the theme of “From Dusk Till Dawn 黃昏到黎明”: not only being available 24/7 to the user but making the experience an enchanting one.

The idea of the Home page is accessibility and content being king.

User Interface Design

Using the colors to differentiate the sections, this grid layout allows for addition or subtraction of information, as the data becomes available. Finally, the additional footer menu further permits quick access to the most used sections.

    The style resonates with the youth – high fashion, vibrant, innovative yet simple. Ours is the haute couture of digital wallet. Just as haute couture is one of a kind, the wallet is unique and customized to each user. The content encourages the user to embark on the journey of personalizing the wallet into his/her own exclusive mobile wallet.

    The grid layout is flexible to incorporate multiple new functions and features as and when it is available. Furthermore, should FET tire of the existing layout, an uplift to the facade of the wallet is but an easy switch with this grid concept.
