Asakusa (浅草) is a district in Taito, Tokyo, Japan, famous for the Sensou-ji (金龍山浅草寺 Kinryū-zan Sensou-ji), a Buddhist temple dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon. The Kaminarimon (雷門 “Thunder Gate”) is the outer of two large entrance gates that ultimately leads to the Sensō-ji (the inner being the Hōzōmon) in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. The gate, with its lantern and statues, is popular with tourists. The street leading to the temple, Nakamise and Shin Nakamise is where you will find the famous senbei 煎餅 rice cracker, made fresh in front of you!

There are several other temples in Asakusa, as well as frequent matsuri (Shinto festivals) in Asakusa, as each temple or shrine hosts at least one matsuri a year (if not every season). The largest and most popular is the Sanja Matsuri in May. Asakusa is also Tokyo’s oldest geisha district, and still has 45 actively working geisha.
